The Department of Music Acoustics – Wiener Klangstil (IWK) is a transdisciplinary research institute at the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. Besides basic research a main focus is on applied research particularly the acoustics of musical instruments and their influences on playing technique. Our research topics include:

  • Acoustic properties and functionality of Musical Instruments
  • Particularities of the Viennese Instruments and their consequences on playing technique
  • Performance Science and physiological acoustics
  • Development of measurement methods for the evaluation of the musical quality of musical instruments

Furthermore, we help and give assistance to instrument makers, we assist students with their Bachelor theses, Masters thesis and PHD thesis, and offer consulting services to musicians, scientists and other target groups.
