Prof. Alex Hofmann from the Department of Music Acoustics – Wiener Klangstil visited Institute for experimental sensor technology in Chemnitz. The focus of the scientific exchange was on current projects in the fields of music acoustics, performance science, digital music research and experimental sensor technology, as well as innovative approaches in these fields.
New Publication in JASA Express Letters

A new article with the title "An experimental approach for comparing the influence of cello string type on bowed attack response" written by Alessio Lampis as a first author and Alexander Mayer and Vasileios Chatziioannou was published in the new Volume of the JASA Express Letters. In the article, our research team explores how string properties affect bowed string attack playability, revealing variations in attack duration across different cello G2 strings using robotic bowing and playability maps.
Lab tour for school children: "Parents at Work – Scientists"

As part of the school project "Parents at Work – Scientists", the Institute for Musical Acoustics – Wiener Klangstil organised a lab tour for primary school children aged 6 to 10. The young participants were given an insight into the world of science: they learned how researchers work and why their profession is so important. Particular focus was placed on interdisciplinary cooperation, which enables scientists from different research areas to work together on projects and solve problems from different perspectives. The aim of the tour was to spark an interest in science and give the children insights into our exciting professional world.
Impressions from the Workshop "Linked Data in the Humanities"

IWK is organizing the workshop titled "Linked Data in the Humanities" with Dr. Terhi Nurmikko-Fuller on 23.10.2024 and 25.10.2024. This two-part workshop is an introduction to both the theory and praxis of publishing information using the Linked Open Data method. The workshop participants will discuss the opportunities, challenges, and the ethical considerations when publishing machine-readable information online, and the implications of combining datasets from various sources. Participants of all skill levels and prior knowledge are welcome. Participation is free, and registration should be completed via email at stojak@mdw.ac.at.
New publications in the Acta Acustica 2024

In the new volume of Acta Acustica, the journal of the European Acoustics Association (EAA), two new publications by our researchers have been published. Montserrat Pàmies-Vilà, together with Alexander Mayer, Ewa Matusiak and Vasileios Chatziioannou, published a paper entitled "A Method for the reproduction of cello bow kinematics using a robotic arm and motion capture", and Alessio Lampis, together with Alexander Mayer and Vasileios Chatziioannou, published a paper entitled "Assesiong playability limits of bowed-string transients using experimental measurements".

Impressions from the 7th International Csound Conference

The Department of Music Acoustics – Wiener Klangstil organised the seventh international Csound conference in September. The four-day conference brought together over 60 international academics, open source software developers, artists and students. The conference programme included 19 talks, 24 musical performances, 5 sound installations, 1 workshop and 1 roundtable discussion, giving participants new insights into the development of the Csound computing system. Keynote talks were given by Victor Lazzarini, Pierre-Alexandre Tremblay and Steven Yi.
7th International Csound Conference at IWK

The Department of Music Acoustics – Wiener Klangstil hosted for the first time the Csound Community at the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. The 7th International Csound Conference takes place from 17th to 20th September 2024 and is bringing together a diverse group of indipendent artists, academics and Open Source Software developers. The goal of the conference is to offer a plattform for a productive dialogue between Csound users and the Csound developers.

At the NIME Conference 2024 in Utrecht, our project team member Tim-Tarek Grund presented the research work done by him, the independent artist Huệ Trinh Lương and Prof. Alex Hofmann titled "Challenges and Prospects in Remote Cross-cultural Musical Interface Design." The study explored the evolving roles in live-electronic music performance through a cross-cultural lens. The research focused on a joint effort between a Vietnamese live-electronic composer and a German instrument maker to develop the Grain Bau, a granular effect sample player inspired by the Vietnamese đàn Bầu. The research is done as part of the project "Études for Live-Electronics" and is funded by Austrian Science Fund.

IWK-researchers Werner Goebl and David Weigl published a journal article titled "mei-friend: An Interactive Web-based Editor or Digital Music Encodings" in the Journal of Open Source Software. The article provides an overview of the browser-based editor for music encodings mei-friend, suitable for researching data objects for musicological analyses and building digital score interfaces for applications in music scholarship and performance.

They visited McGill University in Montreal and took part in the 186th meeting of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA) and Acoustics Week in Canada, where they made a number of contributions in the field of musical acoustics.

The Department of Music Acoustics – Wiener Klangstil is taking part in this year's event "Lange Nacht der Forschung" on 24.05.2024. At three stations - Blowing on the trombone, Digital music research: a journey through time at the Vienna New Year's Concerts and a guided tour through the laboratory of the Department of Music Acoustics – Wiener Klangstil - visitors can gain insights into current research in the fields of music, computer science, natural sciences and digitization. The stations are open from 17:00 to 23:00 and the number of participants is limited.
ASEA-Uninet Meetings and Workshops @iwk

As part of the ASEA-Uninet project "Interoperable storage systems for Musicological Data Collections: Exploring connections of Manila-Vienna-Kuala Lumpur", several meetings and workshops were held in April with the aim of promoting collaborative research on the interoperability of musicological data collections between the Center for Ethnomusicology at the University of the Philippines, TU Wien and mdw. The project-related activities funded by ASEA-Uninet took place at the mdw, TU Vienna and the Phonogrammarchiv Wien.

As part of the European Platform for Artistic Research in Music (EPARM) in Ljubljana, our project collaborator Dustin Zorn gave a presentation entitled "From Stria to Metastasia". The presentation focused on John Chowning's composition Stria and the proliferations of the revived algorithm with the aim of exploring the interpretative space within the computer music repertoire. The research was developed as part of the project "Études for Live-Electronics" and is funded by the Austrian Science Fund.
Kilele – The 1st Music Technology Symposium in East Afrika

The first Music Technology and Innovation Symposium in East Africa took place from February 12th to 18th, on the initiative of the team members of the FWF project "Études for Live-electronics" and Santuri East Africa. With over 40 artists, 20 panelists, 10 workshops, and more than 150 attendees, the Kilele Symposium served as a platform to connect the region's creatives and collectives and global music tech companies, platforms, and innovators. The participants had the chance to review previous accomplishments, exchange their knowledge, and collaboratively outline future directions.
MEI Development Workshop @ IWK: Throwback

The cello professor Diego Arbizu from Conservatorio Superior de Música de Navarra visited us as part of the Erasmus+ Staff Training Mobility Programme and discussed shared interests in cello pedagogy, cello acoustics, and the analysis of bowing playing techniques with researchers from our institute.
Three new Publications in the Forum Acusticum Proceedings

During the Forum Acusticum 2023 conference in Turin, our researchers presented three papers published in the Proceedings of the 10th Convention of the European Acoustics Association Forum Acusticum 2023. These publications covered diverse topics, including "Investigating the Effect of Woodwind Instrument Tone Hole Size Using Particle Image Velocimetry," authored by Titas Lasickas as first author, "A cello bowing playback device? Motion capture meets robotic arm," with Montserrat Pàmies-Vilà as the first author, and "On the capabilities of a 'digital mouthpiece' for real-time recording of embouchure parameters for brass musicians," authored by Paul Amann as the first author.

New Publication about KI and Music in OCG Journal

A new newspaper article with the title "Ein Roboterarm spielt Cello" (tansl. A robotic arm plays the cello) written by our research team members Alexander Mayer, Montserrat Pámies Vilá and Vasileios Chatziioannou was published in the IT_Magazine of the Austrian Computer Society OCG Journal. In the article, our research team presents the existing system and explains how the "task of artificial music-making on the cello could also succeed at a high level" through the use of existing technology and artificial intelligence.

New Year's Concert interpretation in comparison

At the turn of the year, the theme of the Viennese New Year's Concert is becoming more and more relevant. To mark the occasion, our researchers David Weigl and Chanda VanderHart conducted an interview with the FWF in which they discussed the comparison of the various interpretations over the years. The articles entitled "Software macht Neujahrskonzert-Interpretationen vergleichbar" and "Walzerhimmel unter der Lupe" are now available on the APA Science Portal and have been published on ORF and in numerous online newspapers such as Die Presse, Der Standard and Le Monde.

IWK-Institute members Vasileios Chatziioannou and Alex Hofmann have received an early invitation from the Acoustical Society of America to write a lay language paper for the general public about their research on Playability maps for musicians, which was published on the ASA-press website before the Acoustics 2023 Sydney conference.

Our researchers David Weigl and Chanda VanderHart presented the paper "Listen Here! A Web-native digital musicology environment for machine-assisted close listening" at the 10th Interational Conference on Digital Libraries for Musicology in Milan. Within the Project Signature Sound Vienna, a web-native digital musicology environment was created, which captures linked data annotations on abstracted representations of music objects, extending this capability to both encoded score and recorded audio modalities. Funded by the FWF – Austrian Science Fund under the project P 34664-G (Signature Sound Vienna).
VRACE research project successfully completed

The research project "VRACE: Virtual Reality Audio for Cyber Environments", which was initiated in 2019, has been successfully completed. The main goal of the project was to take VR audio technology to a new level and make significant progress towards a physically correct virtual reality. The aim was to create and enable an authentic world simulation for virtual testing and engineering. The project involved 15 Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) funded by the prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (ITN) action program.
Release of the music encoding editor mei-friend v1.0

We are delighted to announce the release of mei-friend v1.0, a browser-based music encoding editor developed and hosted at the mdw. The MEI format offers a comprehensive machine-readable representation of music semantics, suitable for interactive digital score applications. The mei-friend Web application supports collaborative music encoding workflows and flattens the difficulty curve experienced by those newly entering the field. The editor is available from https://mei-friend.mdw.ac.at, with comprehensive documentation at https://mei-friend.github.io. Our open-source development is supported by contributions from MEI community members and funded by the FWF – Austrian Science Fund under projects P 34664-G (Signature Sound Vienna) and I 6019 (E-LAUTE).
Tutorial and Paper at MEC and TEI Conference 2023

In the context of the MEC and TEI Conference 2023 in Paderborn, our institute researchers Werner Goebl and David Weigl will lead the tutorial "Music Encoding with mei-friend". This half-day tutorial will provide a gentle introduction to encoding music with mei-friend, an open-source Web-based MEI editor that aims to lower the barriers to entry to the world of music encoding, while providing a wealth of features and optimisations to facilitate and speed up the encoding process for experienced music editors. In addition, the paper "mei-friend v1.0: Music Encoding in the Browser" will also be presented.

As part of the FWF project "Signature Sound Vienna", the tutorial "Collaborative approaches to discourse: Music scholarship using performance recordings and Linked Data" by David Weigl, Chanda VanderHart, David Lewis and Kevin Page will take place at Digital Humanities (DH) Conference 2023 in Graz. After hands-on ontology design exercises, participants will be introduced to cutting-edge digital tooling and led through research processes of an ongoing project investigating the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concerts.

ASA-Award for our PhD Student

Alessio Lampis, our PhD student at the Department of Music Acoustics – Wiener Klangstil (IWK), recently participated in the Spring 2023 meeting of the Acoustical Society of America in Chicago. Lampis presented a study titled "Examination of the static and dynamic forces at the termination of a bowed string", in collaboration with authors Alexander Mayer, Montserrat Pàmies-Vilà and Vasileios Chatziioannou. The presentation received the second-place award in the Best Student Presentation competition.
